Diaghilev was the greatest impresario of the twentieth century and a man of genius whose influence on ballet was unique.
His designers included Picasso, Gris, Braque, Derain, Matisse, Larionov, Bakst and Benois. On July 17, 1968, and December 19, 1969, Sotheby's auctioned costumes and curtains which had been in storage since the time of the productions. Although their existence was legendary, they had only been seen by those present at the performances. The catalogues here reprinted in book form for the first time with 55 color illustrations, 45 black-aand-white illustrations and over 100 photographs of the original productions and dancers.
