If you plan on visiting Costa Rica or just love growing Gesneriads, this is an essential reference book. While it has enough scientific information for serious researchers, it also has lots of easily understood descriptions and photographs for someone who just wants to know about this beautiful plant family. My only complaint is that it didn't have all the gesneriads native to Costa Rica, just a (large) representative sample.
